Seven Alternatives to Check Before You Take a Title Loan

A title loan is a legitimate tool, but it should be the fourth or fifth option you check, not the first. Here is the shortlist.

  1. 1

    Credit union small-dollar loans

Federal credit unions offer payday alternative loans with capped rates and terms of one to twelve months. Membership is often available through where you live or work, and many credit unions can fund within a couple of business days. This is the single best first call for most borrowers.

  2. 2

Employer payroll advances and earned wage access

A growing number of employers offer advances on wages already earned, frequently at no cost or a flat few dollars. Ask HR directly. It is the cheapest money in this entire list and it is chronically underused.

  3. 3

Negotiating the bill you are trying to pay

Medical providers, utilities, and landlords routinely offer payment plans that cost nothing. If the reason for the loan is a single large bill, calling that creditor first can eliminate the need to borrow at all.

  4. 4

    Local assistance programs

Utility hardship funds, rental assistance, and community action agencies exist in most counties and are widely underclaimed. A single application can cover the exact gap a title loan was going to fill, with no repayment.

  5. 5

A secured card or unsecured personal loan

If your credit is fair rather than poor, an online personal loan will almost always beat a title loan on total cost, even at a high advertised rate. It takes a few days longer, which is the real trade-off.

  6. 6

Selling the vehicle and buying down

If the vehicle is worth substantially more than you need and your transportation needs are modest, selling and replacing it with a cheaper reliable car converts equity to cash with no interest at all.

  7. 7

    Then consider the title loan

If none of those work, a licensed title loan from a lender with amortizing terms and no prepayment penalty is a reasonable tool for a defined short-term gap. Go in with a payoff date, borrow less than the maximum, and compare at least three written offers.

If two of these are open to you, use them first. If none are, a title loan may genuinely be the best option on the table — just take the smallest one that solves the problem.
